Edward Abbey on Desert etiquette
Ed Abbey has recently begun creeping up as my favorite author, surpassing those dark Russian novelists of old. And he is a good author, not just because he talks about saving the desert and the places I grew up in, but because he believes writing is a moral act, and he's good. Read how he describes a lightning storm or about naturalist philosophy, or just a story about blowing up dams...he writes well. Plus, you can't argue with a guy who writes that desert etiquette includes the following if you go into the desert (although you should stay away because the desert isn't a place fit for humans-other than Abbey and his friends)
"Always remove and destroy survey stakes, flagging, advertising, signing boards, mining claim markers, animal traps, poisoned bait, seismic exploration geophones, and other artifacts of industrialism. The men who put those things there are up to no good and it is our duty to confound them. Keep America beautiful. Grow a beard. Take a bath. Burn a billboard." -Desert Solitaire, Ed Abbey-
